Thammasat
Thammasat university was officially established on June 27, 1934, making it the second oldest university in the Kingdom after Chulalongkorn. Thammasat’s name actually means ‘Moral Science’ shortened from its initial name ‘Vichar Thammasat lae Karn Muang’ (In Thai, วิชาธรรมศาสตร์และการเมือง) which means “University (dicipline) of moral Science and politics.” The name was shortened to Thammasat University (มหาวิทยาลัยธาามศาสตร์) by 1952.
The University was established as an independent entity by former Prime Minister, Pridi Panomyong, with a primary aim to ” teach students to love and cherish democracy’. Prior to 1933, it was the Faculty of Law and Political Science under Chulalongkorn University. Initially an Open University, by 1960, entrance examinations were made mandatory.
TU has four primary campuses: Its original campus is in central old Bangkok’s Pra Nakorn district near Tha Prachan peir ท่าพระจันทร์. This campus is home to Pridi Banomyong International College.
In 1986, a new campus was built at the Bangkok suburb, Rangsit in Pathumthani province. Initially reserved for Science and Technology faculties and all first year courses, presently most of all the University’s undergraduate programs are centered at this Rangsit campus.
In 1995, the Pattaya Learning center was established on the eastern seaboard, while the Lampang Learning center (Thammasat Lanna College) opened the following year in Northern Thailand. Additionally, there are smaller regional campuses in Southern and Northeastern Thailand–Naratiwhat and Udonthani provines, respectfully.
